Why Monitor?
In today's information age competition, a smoothly operating Web site provides a distinct competitive advantage. On the Internet, the only hard currency is attention. A Web site that fails to deliver its content, either in a timely manner or at all, causes visitors to quickly lose interest, wasting the time and money invested in the web site development. Ensuring that all of the elements of a Web site are functioning properly is critical to maximizing a company Web investment. When the inevitable failures do occur, minimizing downtime reduces the impact of the problems. Failure of your Web site quickly sends your potential customers to the "just a click-away" competitor. One of the primary advantages of a Web site is its ability to reach customers around the world 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A broken Web site does not fulfill that potential.

My Web site is hosted with an ISP. How would your monitoring services help me?
Your ISP cannot check if your Web site is accessible from outside, where your Customers are. When WebSitePulse.com monitors your Web site, it does it remotely simulating your real Customers’ experience.

What types of applications are monitored?
The WebSitePulse.com service monitors HTTP web servers; HTTPS secure web servers, SMTP and POP3 email servers, FTP, DNS, Telnet and any custom protocols. WebSitePulse.com is constantly adding new features on additional application types to keep up with our client's changing needs.

What should I monitor?
To ensure that your web site is working properly, all available servers need to be monitored. These are: the HTTP server which delivers you web site pages, the HTTPS server if you have secure area on your website and use the Secure server, the FTP server if you provide files for download to your customers, SMTP and POP3 servers to make sure your incoming and outgoing email is moving, etc.

I can monitor my own servers locally. Why do I need WebSitePulse.com?
Often, your servers appear to be working just fine from within your office. You can retrieve web pages, ping the router, etc. WebSitePulse.com does more than monitoring the up/down status of your web site and web server. Individual servers (SMTP, DNS, HTTP, etc) are checked with their respective protocols to ensure the server itself is responding properly. Most important, WebSitePulse.com tells you if your servers are really available to your customers and to the rest of the world, because we perform monitoring over the Internet from different worldwide locations. You will always know with certainty if mail is deliverable, if your DNS server is resolving and if your web site is returning requests and delivering content.

How often does WebSitePulse.com check my site?
Our service monitors and checks your specified Web site protocols and pages you have specified every 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 or 120 minutes, based on your service plan and your selections. The Server protocol monitoring level works at a minimum of 1 minute checking interval, while the Full page monitoring interval minimum is 3 minutes.

What happens if your system detects a problem with my monitored web site and web server?
Every time we detect that there is a problem with your web site and web server, we verify the problem from several other locations to make sure that the problem exists and to reduce the number of false alerts. Once we verify the problem, we notify all your contacts via email, sms, phone and pager. Messages can be customized to reach specific recipients at specified times, specific number of times, during specific hours, and after a problem is detected specific number of consequent times.

What happens if the problem with my web site persists?
We continue checking your Web site availability and response times at regular intervals predefined in your service plan settings. In the meantime, you continue receiving downtime messages until the problem is solved. When your web site resumes its regular activity, you receive a notification that it is functioning normally again.

What does it mean when my contacts are notified that my system is down?
Whether it is a router, web server, or other web device or protocol, a "down" notification means that WebSitePulse.com is unable to reach your system via the Internet. This may happen for several reasons - your web server is down, the Internet connection is down, your Web Hosting provider is having network problems, etc. Our alerts allow troubleshooting before your customers and visitors even notice that something is wrong with your web site or part of it.

How do I know my web site is operating correctly again?
When your web site resumes its regular activity and ability to serve your customers and visitors, you and your contacts receive a notification that it is functioning properly again.

Can WebSitePulse.com notify multiple contacts upon a failure?
Yes. You can add, set up, and we will notify unlimited number of contacts. In addition, we support alert escalation, which means that you can configure contacts to be notified after a certain period of downtime.

Is it possible that some of the alerts I receive are false?
Very rarely you can receive false alerts. Our false alerts prevention system makes sure that all errors are verified from other monitoring stations and only if they confirm the error, an alert is being sent. We constantly monitor and optimize the system, so you do not get alerted with no reason.

Does it matter what my Web site and Web server technical platform is (example: NT, Apache, Linux, UNIX, MAC)?
No, WebSitePulse.com and your clients don't need to know what your technical platform is to use your Web site and buy products or use the services you offer. In fact, our service simulates user experience and users do not care about platforms. Visitors and users are interested in the content of your web pages and they want to have a trouble-free visit to your web site. We help you make sure they do consistently.

Can I monitor more than one Web site with WebSitePulse.com?
Absolutely yes. WebSitePulse.com can monitor as many web sites as you wish with your service account and you will just need to set up the Web domains and addresses of the sites you would like to monitor. Either upgrade your service plan, or add features to your current service plan and add more domains.

I'm concerned about someone hacking my web site. Can you help?
Yes! We can detect changes to your web site's pages, to the files size and to the MD5 string, which is unique for every web page. If anything that we monitor changes, you will be notified immediately.

I have a user name/password protected page. Can your service verify it is working?
Yes, WebSitePulse.com can verify that your user name and password protected page is working properly. If it is simple (basic HTTP) authentication, you can use the URL monitoring, providing your username and password. If you want to monitor pages with some other kind of authentication, we will need the exact URL and some test credentials so that we can analyze it and offer you the best monitoring option.

Does your service support Secure Socket Layer for ecommerce transactions?
Yes, WebSitePulse.com capabilities include the monitoring of Web pages that require Secure Socket Layer connections. This will enable you to monitor all your "https" sites for performance, response time and downtime.

Why do you support multiple geographic monitoring stations?
When one of our monitoring stations detects a problem with your web site and web server, it triggers one of the other monitoring stations to confirm that it is detecting the same problem. This multiple confirmation of a problem helps to reduce false alerts. You are notified only if the problem is confirmed by at least one independent monitoring location. Second, using multiple servers gives you an idea of the performance seen by users in different geographic locations.

How do I Manage my account?
With every service account we provide you with an online control panel, which is protected with your own login ID and password. From the control panel you have total control over all settings, management tools, contacts and real time report and graphics.

What happens if your monitoring server goes down?
We monitor from multiple stations at diverse data centers. If a primary server fails, one of the remaining servers will immediately take on primary service with a synchronized copy of all data. Our servers monitor each other as well as your site.

Will the traffic on my web site increase by performing the Monitoring Service?
No. The packets of information we send are extremely small and the Service will not affect the traffic of your web site.

Will your service affect the performance of my site?
No. Our engine looks like any other web site visitor to your site.

Yes. You need to set up your firewall to accept traffic from our I.P. addresses. That is why we recommend you to configure your firewall to allow access from all our monitoring locations which are listed with their respective IP addresses on the "Monitoring network" page: http://www.websitepulse.com/network.php3 Please notice that if you want to have PING or Traceroute information from the monitoring your firewall will also have to allow ICMP packets to be sent to the monitored servers. These IPs are subject to change but we will make sure to notify you several days before any update is made.

How do I use the e-mail gateway on my cell phone to receive notifications?
Each digital phone within the US has an e-mail address attached to it and all e-mail sent to that email address gets forwarded to that cell phone. This is the email address that is used to send notifications to wireless devices as well as alphanumeric pagers.

How do I know that your service works?
Try it! We stand behind our product with a 30-day Money Back Guarantee. If for any reason you are not completely satisfied with our services within the first 30 days and decide to cancel your service account, we will gladly provide you with a full refund, no questions asked.

What is a Ping?
'Ping' is a network utility that monitors the time delay and reliability of messages sent across the network. A small message is sent, and the receiving computer immediately sends a response message. By monitoring the time delay and percentage of responses that are received, we can estimate the network reliability and latency. We also use ping to determine whether your host computer is online. Failure to respond to a ping indicates that your computer is either down or not connected to the Net.

What is the difference between host and Full-Page monitoring?
First of them is to monitor your locations using our host monitoring feature. With this option our monitoring agent will connect to your site, send a simple request and check the content of the response header returned by your server, without checking the content of the opened page. The second option is the so-called URL monitoring. This service allows you to set up and perform Full-Page monitoring for a particular URL or file. Our monitoring agent connects to your server and downloads the page content, searches the page for the keywords that you have specified and alerts you if they are present or missing, checks the file size. The service is currently available for HTTP, HTTPS and FTP URLs.

Do you provide WAP monitoring?
You can monitor your Wireless Application Protocol page with WebSitePulse as an HTTP. You can also view your Current status at our wap.websitepulse.com.

Can you monitor WindowsMedia servers?
Currently the only way to monitor this type of servers is the WebSitePulse.com Custom port monitoring feature. If you provide us with the host you want to monitor we can set a test target for you.

Can you monitor wireless routers?
At the moment monitoring wireless gateway routers is not possible for us. There is no problem pinging the devices to see if the Internet connection is up and that the modem and router are plugged in. We need detailed information about what and how exactly you wish to monitor this device in order to see if we could provide this type of monitoring.

How to monitor a SQL server?
The easiest way to check if your SQL server is up is to set the URL for full page monitoring and configure it to alert you if any of the words "ERROR" or "SQL server" are found in the page content.

Do you monitor free space in /var or zombies?
Unfortunately we do not monitor free space in /var. We do not monitor Zombies either. To monitor that we have to provide special program to be installed at your side which we do not offer.

How can I prevent monitoring from throwing off my website statistics?
You can exclude our monitoring agent's visits from your statistics by blocking its IP or its name. It's better to do it by the name, because we are changing the IPs more frequently. It is enough to specify in your stats software only the beginning of the monitoring agent's name, that is "Websitepulse". However, if you decide to do it by IP, you can find the IPs for each monitoring location in the Monitoring Locations section. >> http://www.websitepulse.com/locations.php3

How can I monitor a secure IMAP?
There is a possibility to monitor your secure IMAP with "Custom port" option in your account. Just go to Servers section (http://www.websitepulse.com/servers.php3) and click on "Edit" to the desired host. There you can specify Custom port to monitor with TCP or UDP protocol. By default Secure IMAP ports are simap (993) and spop (995). Also you can specify "Request" field - this will be send when connection to custom port is established, and "Keywords" - part of the expected response from server.

Is it possible to monitor dynamically assigned IP addresses?
Unfortunately there is no way to monitor IPs that are dynamically assigned unless there is DNS record that is dinamically updated to resolve to the last IP assigned to your device.

Does WebSitePulse offer DNS monitoring?
Yes, we offer DNS server monitoring. To start monitoring your DNS server first you have to add this feature to your plan from the "Customize services" page (http://www.websitepulse.com/addfeatures.php3).

Can WebSitePulse monitor SFTP?
Currently we can monitor if the SSH port on your server is opened and working and this could be sufficient.

Can WebSitePulse monitor Javascript?
Currently our monitoring agent will not parse and execute JavaScript code, but there are several workarounds that will let you monitor your pages. If you can send us the URL(s) you want to monitor and some details about how they should perform we can check it and configure it for you.

I am using the free trial. Can I receive SMS alerts?
The SMS notifications work as well as all the other features in the free trial version of our monitoring service. The plan is only not to exceed the value of $ 75. You have to activate Multiple contacts in your Customize services section. Then you go to Notification contacts and add the required phone number for SMS notifications.

I cancelled my account last month. Why am I being charged again this month?
We are charging at the beginning of every month for the services used in the previous month. This month you are charged for the services used from the 1st and /date/ when you canceled your account.

How can I provide my billing information?
To provide billing information over the web site, please log in to http://www.websitepulse.com/members.php3 , select billing information, fill in the information and submit it. For your protection, we do not keep this information on a our servers. It is sent to our billing department over a secure connection only.

I want to be alerted on 100% ping loss. How to do this?
If you want to receive alerts for 100% ping loss, you must activate "Ping Only Devices" in your account (http://www.websitepulse.com/addfeatures.php3) and monitor your host with this option. With this configuration, you monitor your HTTP port and if there are any failures with it you'll receive messages (note that you may have 100% ping lost with no fails at HTTP - that's for example firewall rule that blocks UDP packets - those used in ping).

How do you synchronize TIME on your servers?
We are using the time servers provided by NIST. http://www.boulder.nist.gov/timefreq/service/time-servers.html

Do you support client-side SSL certificate?
Currently we don't have this feature on our site but we have the technology to do so and if you send us the client-side cert and a list of hosts you want to use it for our developers will make a custom monitoring agent to monitor the pages you need. Unfortunately due to the large number of different cert formats we cannot offer you a way to manage from our website the client certificates used by our monitoring agent so if you ever need to update the certificate you will have to send it to us by email and wait for a few hours until it is distributed around our servers. This will not add any additional charges to your account except the ones that apply when adding new URLs.

Is there a false alert prevention feature with WebSitePulse?
If an error is detected the monitoring agent tries to confirm it with a secondary location. The secondary location performs the same tests as the primary location and sends the result back to the monitoring agent. If there was a problem connecting to the secondary location the confirmation procedure is repeated with a third location and if the error is not confirmed or both second and third location are unreachable the monitoring agent will record a successful test. Currently you cannot change the locations that are used to confirm the error. Also if your account has more than one monitoring location you can configure the "False alert prevention" level to make the monitoring agent sent an alert only if the error is confirmed by at least 50% of the locations (Strong level) or if the error is detected by all monitoring location (Strict level)

What is measured by the response time?
The response time for a server does not include the download time of the files. It is the time from the initiation of a connection to getting the acknowledgment reply from the server. It does not matter how big your homepage is. The time shown on the logs is in milliseconds.

How does the Ping test work?
The Ping checks are done by sending certain number of packages from our monitoring agent (the location that you have chosen) to your monitored target. These packages have to come back to the monitoring agent. If some number of packages does not come back this means that they are lost. That number compared to the number of the sent will determine the percentage of the loss. That means that your clients that want to reach your monitored target may have problems like slow connection, termination of connection, etc. The Ping loss can be caused by a firewall (put by you or your provider) in front of your monitored target or network problems.

Do you provide OWA monitoring?
Outlook Web Access (OWA) allows any client with a compatible browser to access Exchange Server folders. Normally you would need a plan with at least one URL to monitor this kind of page and/or one Transaction if you want to simulate several user actions in a row. Unfortunately the OWA utilizes the so called NTLM authorization which is currently not supported by our monitoring agent. We are planning to introduce this feature soon.

Is it possible to use different number of locations for each host?
Yes, it is possible. You can reduce the number of monitoring locations of a specific host if you go to Scheduled Downtime (on the left side of your screen) or http://www.websitepulse.com/downtime.php3. From there you have to click on locations and then you may reduce the monitoring locations (It's advisable not to uncheck your primary location, because if there is a failure you will not receive an alert).

Does monitoring affect counters?
It depends on the counter you are using. If the counter is a picture the monitoring will not affect it, but on every check a hit form websitepulse will be reported in your access log.

What is MD5 checksum or URL page content hash?
The MD5 hash checksum is mostly used as a prevention against unauthorized content changes, but it will not work with dynamically generated pages which display different content every time. The hash is calculated when you save the URL in your WebSitePulse account and you or the contacts you've selected will be notified if the recorded MD5 hash doesn't match the one that is calculated from the monitored URL.

I get extensive false positives, what is the problem?
The first way to stop receiving such alerts is to increase the "Response time" of the steps in your transactions and the second one is to stop the timeout warnings in contact properties (http://www.websitepulse.com/notify.php3).

How to monitor wireless gateway routers?
Our service allows you to monitor routers and other devices, which are not listening on a specific port, using the "PING Only" monitoring - our monitoring agent will try to ping the device on a regular basis and will alert you if the device is unreachable (a 100% packet loss is reported). We are also offering the so called "Custom port" monitoring which allows you to specify a non-standard port to be monitored.

What is measured in Transaction time and Total transaction time?
The response time measures the time to load only the page content. It does not include any outside components like images, stylesheets or applets. As for the "Total transaction time" it is the sum of the response times of every step in the monitored transaction.

Can I have different monitoring frequency for each host?
Yes, we can handle this. From the "Customize services" page you need to select the lowest frequency you would like to use. We will adjust your monthly plan to reflect each individual service that you use once you set them up the way you need it. Please inform us when you reconfigure your settings so that we can perform the change.

What can cause a "SSL Connection Timeout" error?
The error reported from our monitoring agent is "SSL Connection Timeout". This means that there is a timeout in the SSL handshake. The SSL Connection timeout deadline used by our agent is 120 seconds. One of the possible reasons for this error can be the high load of your server, caused by many connections for example. Please review the load of the machine at this time period and if the SSL timeouts continue or you have any additional questions, don't hesitate to contact us.

Why do I get incorrect uptime?
Currently our report system calculates the uptime percentage from the number of failures detected during the selected period and not from the time the server was being detected down. The problem is that in some cases when an error is detected a check might take much more time to complete, because of the secondary checks and the other tests that are performed when an error was detected. During this time no new tests are being started because of the fact that overlapping database during the downtime period and the uptime statistics are higher then expected. Unfortunately there is no way to change the ways the reports on our site are generated.

What means an "Internal Server Error"?
The "Internal Server Error" error message normally indicates a problem with your web server or with the monitored page and there should be additional information in your web server logs. Our monitoring agent is sending the same request every time so it is not very likely that something on our side is triggering this error. A possible reason for this error is that your server requires some HTTP header which is not being sent by our monitoring agent. For example the Accept-language and the Referer headers are not required by default but some of the HTTP servers will respond with an "Internal server error" if they are not provided.

How to reset stats?
To reset the stats of a specific target please login to your WebSitePulse.com account, click the "details" link next to the target you want to reset. At the bottom of the "Target Details" page there is a link "Reset Stats" that will reset all statistics for the selected target. Please notice that this will also reset any links generated from the "Uptime Stats Publisher" so you will have to generate those links again.

How long do you keep the log data ?
By default the log data expires after 1 month for all services but there is an option at the Customize services section which lets you keep your data longer. Unfortunately we cannot recover the expired daily and weekly logs. But you can view your monthly uptime statistics. The monitoring logs are normally deleted between the 10th and 15th day of the month and normally the detailed monitoring information is available in fact for the last 40 days. We recommend you to download your report every 1st day of the month - thus you will have a full report for the last month.

How can I deactivate the reports by email?
You need to go to "Reports by email" section. There in the "Contact" select box you have to select the contact at which you do not want to receive reports and mark the check-in box above. Then you click on the "Show" button. As a result all the reports for the selected contact will be listed. On the right of each of them there is a delete button.

Can I use WSP statistics without the WSP logo showing on my page?
If you are using our stats pages, our logo and links will be there. You can obtain the stats using WSDL and you can make your own stats page and then you can avoid showing our logo and links. For more information you can visit "Stats Publisher" section of your account.

What is the purpose of Traceroute information and how to activate it?
The purpose of traceroute is to identify the problematic server that is causing the error, and that is why we send traceroute info only if there is an error before reaching your servers. Traceroute is a very resource consuming operation and it will slow down your servers a lot if we do it all the time. If you want, you can go to our main page/test tools and enter the IP of your server and select traceroute. This will do a single traceroute. To activate the Traceroute Information option first you have to go to Customize services section www.websitepulse.com/addfeatures.php3 and check the box for Traceroute Information. This will increase your monthly charge with $3 only. Then you go to Monitored Hosts section and for every host from "Edit properties" you will have to enable the "Include Traceroute Information" option.

Can I assign a specific report to a specific contact?
In order to add a new contact with a new username you have to go to Notification Contacts section in the left section of your screen and there you should click on "Add a new e-mail contact". After that you type in your personal information and select the hosts you would like to monitor and the settings for the specific host. After that you select "Add/change alert configuration". After that you have to select the type of report you want to receive from Reports by e-mail section (on the left side of the screen) and of course you have to select the contact person and finally you click the "Add" button.

What is WSDL?
This option gives you real time access to our server. You can retrieve statistics from our database using SOAP and WSDL, which can be easily implemented in different applications. There are some simple examples and some sample SOAP request/response pairs in the WSDL package (http://www.websitepulse.com/wsdl/wsdl.zip) which you might want to check. If you tell us what technology you are planning to use the WSDL with, our developers will send you some additional information on how to implement it. Also you can find the detailed WSDL specification at http://www.w3.org/TR/wsdl You'll also need an access key to be able to use the API ("Application Programming Interface," by which an application program can access the computer's operating system), which must be requested. Currently the API provides the following data: - current status - monthly uptime statistics Please notice that you can not make more than 100 requests for a given day.

How to prevent IE (Internet Explorer) from caching?
The problem is that sometimes Internet Explorer shows old pages of WebSitePulse's Current Status page, etc. Solution 1: While hitting the refresh button of IE, hold the Shift key. (or press Shift+F5). This must tell IE to fetch the page from the server even if the page is already in the IE's cache. Solution 2: Force IE to check not to use cached pages: In the IE menu, click on Tools/ Internet options / Settings (at Temporary Internet files block) / Check for new pages: -> Every visit to the page.
